GITEX GLOBAL 2025: Dubai launches world’s first Smart Gold and Jewellery Testing Lab for precise metal purity checks

Dubai Central Laboratory, a division of Dubai Municipality, has introduced the Smart Gold and Jewellery Testing Lab, the first smart self-service device globally designed for assessing the purity of precious metals such as gold, silver, and platinum. This initiative further solidifies Dubai’s position as a premier destination for the trade of gold, jewellery, and precious metals.

Functioning entirely autonomously and without the need for human interaction, this groundbreaking solution employs advanced spectroscopic analysis, X-ray technology, and artificial intelligence (AI) to provide highly accurate results in less than one minute.

Unveiled at GITEX GLOBAL 2025, this innovative device is a product of a strategic partnership between Dubai Central Laboratory and the Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group, which comprises prominent traders, manufacturers, and experts within this vital sector. This collaboration underscores the commitment of both organizations to foster Dubai’s vision for innovation by developing smart solutions that enhance customer experiences and align with global market developments. Furthermore, it propels the emirate’s ongoing initiative to leverage advanced technologies for the benefit of its communities and economic sectors.

A breakthrough in precious metal testing services

Dr. Naseem Mohammed Rafi, acting CEO of the Environment, Health and Safety Agency at Dubai Municipality, stated: “The new device was developed exclusively for Dubai Municipality under the supervision of a specialized technical team from Dubai Central Laboratory. We incorporated the latest advanced technologies to create a transformative leap in the way precious metals are tested and verified. This innovation establishes a new global standard for speed, precision, and reliability in laboratory testing for this sector.”

She further added: “At Dubai Municipality, we are committed to adopting cutting-edge technologies and AI to enhance our operations and services for residents, visitors, and the business community. Our goal is to ensure Dubai’s laboratory and calibration services remain among the most efficient, advanced, and intelligent worldwide, strengthening the emirate’s global competitiveness and reinforcing its role as a leading gateway for the international precious metals trade.”

In a similar vein, Eng. Hind Mahmoud Ahmed, director of the Dubai Central Laboratory Department at Dubai Municipality, highlighted the Laboratory’s ongoing commitment to develop smart solutions in line with Dubai’s future vision. She remarked that the creation of the world’s first self-service precious metal purity testing device was driven by strategic criteria designed to ensure its success and reliability, focusing on technical precision and seamless digital integration with the Laboratory’s current information systems.

Eng. Ahmed elaborated: “We prioritized elevating the customer experience and ease of use, ensuring that the device operates safely and efficiently without human intervention, supported by an intelligent design that guarantees rapid emergency response. The solution also features advanced traceability and reliability, enabling remote performance monitoring, self-calibration, and maintenance, ensuring consistent and sustainable quality of results.”

First device to be installed at the Gold Souk

Dubai Municipality plans to install the inaugural version of the precious metal testing device at the Gold Souk in Deira, marking the start of a phased rollout across key markets and strategic locations throughout the emirate. This initiative supports the entity’s ongoing efforts to create a fully integrated testing ecosystem that strengthens the gold and jewellery sector.
